hello bahrin,

the best way to tune in ATDI is to make a CW test , then you must make correlation between the measurement and the predicitons until you reach the best value ( +- 2%)....you must only tune the clutter height without adding any losses since the tuning is done for the frive test that you have made ( not inside buildings)... once you tune the whole clutter, you can add the losses of the clutters as per their type to include the indoor coverage ( this is for mobile WiMAX)....

First u need to do the coverage calculation, then use the field strength converter to get the equivalent unit you're interested. You can then use the general filter to service area you're interested in.

Model tuning in ICS telecom depend on a lot of factors. There are many parameters that need to be considered. First of all what is the map resolution u have. The simplest thing is by tuning the clutter if u have such layer. To further improve u may tune the clutter height, diffraction and reflection parameter or even the dB/km. I've tried tuning only with the clutter loss and it gives roughly about 85 to 90% of the measured area within 6 dB.

Dear All,
thanks for your valuable comments in this group.... I have been using ATDI form more than 2 years and i have seen a huge improvement on.

The only thing which i dont like with ATDI is the propgation models which seems that it is providing us a non resonable amount of Base stations when planning wimax .16e and a lot of tuning is required.

if you have any informations that helps me on this, please provide it to me.

in addition to that, i am still unable to perfrom a perfect tuning on ATDI ( correlation between estimations and real measurments). please help on this one also.

Hello Richard,

Daniel Humire with ATDI here. Let me offer you some guidance on using ICS telecom properly for WiMAX.

I believe the options you were looking to use are both in the System Gain Calculator (define threshold levels and throughput associated to different subchannelization permutations) and the Channels tab of the Tx/Rx parameters box. I would get in touch with Tao Wan in your group who should have a fair amount of familiarity with using ICS telecom to help guide you.

The segmentation options for modeling FUSC, PUSC and AMC are in the Channels tab. The information on MAC overhead can be defined in the OFDMA or System Gain Calculator. The tool's subsciber element can model mobility with 250m of the pixel it is located in to simulate mobility and options to model QoS in terms of contention as well as 24 HR usage reports for different types of users (business vs. average consumer) and scheduling of priority. Using the Channels tab settings appropriately, you can model UL/DL CINR maps and demonstrate the increase or decrease in C/N ratio and thus model increase in offered throughput UL or DL or minimization in interference. What is more, and what is lacking in Atoll, is a true frequency management engine (they offer you to connect to your own external module) for MFN. Essentially, they offer no options for spectral analysis, no real ability to model full duplex. Another major drawback with Atoll is that the templates for WiMAX fixed and mobile do not allow you to combine with the templates say for MW. So no cross convergence of technologies, no subscriber to MW interference, in essence, no real design related modeling capability. More oriented for cellular level planning where the tool is not responsible for helping an engineer solve problems so much as confirm what they already know.

Regarding Asset, similar constraints as Forsk, not really a problem solving tool. Big constraint with Asset is it requires work with Oracle database. So not really a stand alone modeling tool only works in a server configuration mode. This is ok if you are a major operator with Oracel DB managers on staff but average RF engineer from a consultation firm would be hard pressed to be able to use this in day to day analysis.

Big flaw in both tools is they outsource the development of the below 10m modeling or modeling high resolution cartographic data. Not only do both tools not offer any GIS support (outsourced so no pricing leverage but this is ok if you are an established operator and have archives of MapInfo or ESRI GIS data in storage from 2G deployment days) but require you to buy an additional plug in from AWE for ray tracing and higher fidelity analysis. This is a big problem with WiMAX because the design issues with WiMAX are quite significant (see Sprint/Nextel). The typical range you can get from 2.4 GHZ or 3.5 GHZ BS is going to be less than 5km in an urban area. I am hearing the range is less than 1 km which is like WiFi mesh! It's simple physics, the higher frequency you go the less coverage range you get even over flat earth. The only stand alone, accurate modeling platform for this technology, which is really FWA in nature, is ICS telecom. Hi,

Reasonably new to the forum. I've just done a advanced WiMAX planning course where botht he ADTI and Forsk tools where utilized. I think there are two parts to my observations, which I preferred and which was best for the job.

Personally, I preffered the Forsk tool since my company is focusing on mobile WiMAX planning which (to be frank) the ADTI tool is not brilliant at. Secondly, the ADTI tool did not have the technical level of detail about the WiMAX cells and mobile devices. It could do various plots and simulations, however the data was subject to the unerstanding that we couldnt correctly configure the PUSC, FUSC and AMC zones, as well as provide information on MAC overheads and our scheduling services. The ADTI tool does have a good calculator which looks at PUSC and FUSC, however you can't map the output into a realistic example.

It just so happened that we spend 10% of time on the ADTI tool and the rest on the forsk tool. My company has both tools and have since chosen to focus on using Forsk...just wish the licences were cheaper :)

I just would like to inform you that Planet is no longer a MSI tool; actually MSI has been bought by Marconi a while ago, then by Ericsson, and then the whole Planet business got acquired by Mentum. It is now developed by mentum (http://www.mentum.com) and, frankly, has now very little to do with its ancestor. Planet certainly supports WiMAX, and has been in use by WiMAX operators and manufacturers for many years now. If you have interest in it, I recommend you contact Mentum directly.

I have experience only in using planning tools Planet from MSI and Asset from Aircom. Could you compare ATDI with these tools?
