I'm in the process of designing a WISP for a rural community. We intend to install a 180-190' tower and broadcast at 900 mhz for the NLOS areas, as well as, 5.x Ghz for our farther, LOS areas. Also, the NLOS extends approx. 1.5 miles out from the tower location (in all 360 degrees).

Also, we intend to drop Internet, Phone (VoIP) and TV (IPTV) all at once.

We're currently in the process of finalizing the land deal so we can conduct the geo tech (soil analysis). Once we conduct the geo tech, we have a local company lined up to manufacture the tower. So, we have that much arranged.

Now, as far as the content provisioning for the IPTV, ensuring enough bandwidth is available on our local network for HD / digital channels, VoIP, etc., let alone the actual hardware manufacturer we will be utilizing have yet to be determined.

Do you have any suggestions?

We are thinking, and trying to work this out with Dish Network, that we can bring the TV content in over a Satellite down-link into our NOC, run it through a central processing server (for video codecs / decryption, etc) and then send it up the pole and out to the set-top-boxes. However, we keep hearing from some people that a head-end is necessary for the video decryption / processing prior to sending it out on the network; whereas, others have told us we only need the head-end if we are going to be modifying the signal (eg. inserting our own TV advertisements into the broadcast).

Finally, because we want to ensure that we can have as many HDTV subscribers as possible, without negatively effecting either our VoIP or IP services, we are thinking 6 - 60 degree sectors per cluster. One cluster would be running the 900 mhz, while the other cluster would be running on the 5.x Ghz.

I'd love to hear your guy's input... Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Joseph Johnson

Hello!

I am NOT a radio engineer or a vendor, etc I have become involved in a WiMAX project consulting for a utility company (Law/MBA). We have obtained 3.65 licenses and funding from the government for a 'feasability' study for internet and wireless meter reading.

Im am in a very rugged area near the mountains and want to install towers and radio equipment for 3.65. The utility intends to use 3.65 to provide internet for its customers (that only have dial-up now) and also install wireless meter reading (AMR) networks for gas, water and maybe electricity meters (usually electricity is first for AMR in populted areas- but we use a different model)..

Our engineer only wants to use Airspan equipment. I'm fine with this, but have to 'review' his advice - especially as he wanted to become a 'dealer' and resell equipment to 'Us', the utility (with commission) and intended on being a 'dealer' for many other utilities too.

What other 3.65 vendors should I look at? Why are they and/or their latest 3.65 radios, etc. a better alternative? What kind of experiences have customers had with Airspan? (I see they are suing a past client, Buzz Broadband, and have some concerns, as after a little investigation of the lawsuit I can see Buzz has some defence (not just as papers said when you read court documents and other). Buzz is now in Bankruptcy. . ,

Anyway, it would be great to get some insight and advice- it's a very interesting and .unusual WiMAX project and your comments could make a real difference!
