As the founder and Technical Director of Data Communications Technology (DCT), a technical consulting firm started in March 1983, Alan J Weissberger specializes in telecommunications standards and their implementation. His clients have included network providers (AT&T, NTT, Pacific Bell, US West, Entel and CTC in Chile, Telkom South Africa, Moroccan PTT, others), equipment and semiconductor manufacturers (many), and large end users. In 1995 and 1996 Alan was the principal architect for the European Commission’s multi-service, multi-country ATM network – the largest private network in Europe (that network has now evolved into Gig Ethernet over CWDM). In 2000-2001, he was Ciena’s lead ITU-T delegate, contributing to the standardization of the optical control plane in SG13 and SG15. From 2003-2005, Alan represented NEC Corp in several OASIS TCs dealing with Web Services, while also attending the Global Grid Forum and the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) as a principal member.

WiMAX Forum urges India to Proceed with Auctions in Jan 2010; Intel to the rescue?

Amid concerns that India’s auction of 3G and BWA (=WiMAX) spectrum may be delayed once more (see my previous posts on this topic), the WiMAX Forum opined that every six months of delay in the process results in $1bn in lost revenues for the country. The latest official date given for the auction is January 2010, but after numerous delays this may be postponed yet again. IT Minister Raja has become :"the boy who cried wolf," as no one believes him anymore.

Sprint, Comcast, Time Warner Cable Launch Mobile WiMAX In Local Markets Via Clearwire

Sprint launched commercial WiMAX services in Honolulu and Maui in Hawaii and in Seattle, Washington. Sprint is the largest investor in Clearwire and offers its MVNO WiMAX service under the "Sprint 4G" brand

Meanwhile, Comcast launched high-speed wireless data service in Chicago and Seattle, as Time Warner Cable began marketing its own version of the service in Dallas, TX.

MVS (Mexico), Intel, Clearwire to Invest $700 Million in Mobile WiMAX

MVS Comunicaciones SA said it plans to invest about $700 million in WiMax technology along with Clearwire Corp. and Intel Corp. to offer wireless high-speed Internet service in 23 Mexican cities.

The partners would start the network in the second half of 2010, MVS spokesman Felipe Chao said today in an e-mail. The Mexico City-based company expects to win government approval by the end of this year for a request to extend its license to operate airwaves necessary for the project, Chao said.

Clearwire and the Outlook for 4G Competition by Pike & Fischer: Hand held devices urgently needed!

Without good, affordable handheld devices, WiMax service faces some notable challenges. That's the gist of a report from research company Pike & Fischer, which states: "The company pioneering the next generation in wireless broadband communications could face trouble growing its user base because it lacks compelling handheld devices at competitive prices."
