WiMAX is making great progress in Australia, as Adam Internet connected its first customers and said it’s targeting 14 service areas for WiMAX deployment in Australia in 2010. You might be surprised to hear that Clearwire’s General Manager of Philadelphia Andrew Kupiec thinks the city’s mobile market isn’t crowded. It’s a big market, he says, and there’s plenty of room in the proverbial sandbox.

Fierce Wireless reports that CLEAR reseller Comcast is executing on their plan to test WiMAX femtocells.
"Comcast confirmed that it is currently testing WiMAX femtocells, actions that hint at an expanded wireless broadband effort on the part of the nation's largest cable provider. Sprint Nextel Corp. said it plans to cut 2,000 to 2,500 jobs, or roughly 5% of its work force, as the cellphone-service provider seeks to cut annual costs by at least $350 million.
It's the second significant round of cuts this year as the embattled company struggles to return to profitability and subscriber growth. The Overland Park, Kan., company currently employs about 42,000 people.

Comcast announced today that its "4G" wireless service was now available in Philadelphia.
"As Comcast's hometown, Philadelphia is one of the most technologically progressive cities on the East Coast. Clearwire Corp. started selling its CLEAR WiMAX service in Chicago on November 1st at its retail stores, as well as Best Buy and RadioShack. The network stretches from Gary to Rockford, although service initially won't be available everywhere. To date, it's the largest WiMAX footprint for CLEAR.

For Mobile WiMAX advocates, this conference was mostly disappointing. No firm announcement on the long rumored tri-mode (WiMAX, 3G-EVDO, WiFi) smart phone, uncertain pricing for MIDs (see earlier wimax360 post), nothing on mobile video/Sprint TV for WiMAX, and no announcements of eReaders or cameras with embedded WiMAX interfaces.
