Kamrul Hasan WiMAX vs WiFi

Basically difference between WiMAX and WiFi are distance, speed, cost, and so on. WiMAX coverage area about 30 miles (50 km) and WiFi coverage area about 10 km. WiMax (802.16) is is a newer standard of wireless networking designed to provide the last mile of high speed internet access to the end user. Some people would call Wimax WiFi on steroids but this would be to broad of an assessment. Wifi was and still will be used in LAN environments for the foreseeable future. WiMax was designed to pro… Continue

Alan J Weissberger Intel gets the mobility message- or do they? IBM Investing $100 million in mobile research

Forbes mag on-line: "From Moorestown to WiMax, mobile technologies have clearly become the new favorite for the semiconductor giant. An Intel group in Portland, for example, collaborated with a group of independent companies to make the 802.16m wireless standard 40% more efficient at handling voice-over-IP calls. That seemingly esoteric trick will make Intel-built WiMax chip products better able to tackle the mundane task of transmitting phone calls over IP-based networks, something pretty han… Continue

Paul Sergeant WiMAX in the Caribbean

I spent most of last week visiting a Cisco WiMAX customer in the Caribbean island of Curacao. Scarlet BV offers a wireless broadband service in the Nederland Antilles islands, some of the most southerly islands in the Caribbean Sea. Curacao is the biggest of the 4 islands that make up the Nederland Antilles, still owned and governed by Holland, although with a large degree of autonomy. The population of about 130,000 is made up of 50,000 Dutch, with the rest coming from all over. The island is… Continue

Alan J Weissberger WiMAX in India- Chapter XYZ: Tata broadband growth muted on WiMAX auction delay

We have written extensively about the potential and promise of WiMAX in India assuming the spectrum auctions are held and winning operators use that spectrum for Mobile WiMAX rather than 3G. The seemingly never ending auction delay has resulted in another casualty- Tata Communications Ltd. "Without WiMax, growth (in retail broadband Internet services) will be minimal because there is a constraint on the cables in place," Srinivas Addepalli, senior vice president of corporate strategy, told Dow… Continue

Article posted at: http://viodi.com/2009/06/14/tiecon2009/ What is the role of WiMAX in Mobile Wireless Networks? It was not at all mentioned during TiEcon2009.
