FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has pledged to "unleash the spectrum" for 4G mobile broadband. According to Genachowski, the next generation of mobile technology will "make all the difference."
"More and more I hear people say that broadband is the future of mobile, and I agree. I also believe the reverse is true - mobile is essential to the future of broadband. And the next generation of mobile technology - 4G - will make all the difference," said Genachowski. "4G will provide mobile connectiv…

I wanted to start off today’s post by thanking the organizers of last week’s 4GWE event. I enjoyed giving a keynote about the broadband stimulus and its many elements, from the rules and regulations to the recent submission process. The event was a tremendous success and I am looking forward to the
January event in Miami (and not just so I can get away from the Rhode Island winter!)
This weekend, I read an…

I’m back in Rhode Island today after a very productive couple of days in NYC. As you might expect, top of my agenda for the NY trip was the

As Towerstream continues to evaluate the broadband stimulus and its application process, I decided to attend one of the
NTIA’s workshops last week to get the latest information, straight from the source. The organization has actually been hosting these workshops across the country in the past few weeks to ensure that the application process is…

It’s been a busy few days in the broadband world. As many of you probably know, the Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for the broadband stimulus program was announced last week, outlining the rules for both the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) and the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). The massive NOFA document is 120+ pages – clearly far too long…

Earlier this week, I
posted a few thoughts on how the broadband gap isn’t isolated to rural areas of the U.S., but affects urban areas too. I took that as an opportunity to encourage local governments and community groups to band together to tackle the issue themselves, in conjunction with the federal government’s broadband stimul…

The broadband stimulus has lead to a lot of talk recently about the rural areas across the country that lack broadband coverage. In fact, just last week,
an article in the Tennessean reviewed broadband grievances from consumers and business owners a like.
The article noted, “In many counties, the pu…

The FCC has not yet defined several key terms that are needed to be understood by the government officials doling out broadband stimulus money. At the request of lawmakers and lobbying groups, the FCC is (at long last) in the process of defining "broadband," "underserved," "unserved area" and other terms. The FCC is advising the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which will make the final call on how stimulus money gets allocated to companies building out broadban…

The U.S. stimulus package will award $7.2 billion for broadband, much of that ear marked for small rural telephone companies and WISPs.
We understand that a bit more than a third of the money will be administered through the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), which has until Sept. 30 of this year to make awards. While rural telcos are not the only companies eligible to receive RUS money, they may be best positioned to receive it because many of them are already familiar with the grant/approval proc…

Do city's know they don't need money to deploy wireless broadband. Quick math what are your data cost per mo. now what are your wired phones per mo. Total those numbers. If it's a huge city, they may be spending 200.000 a mo. If you take there existing infrastructure, public safety towers, there's a savings.I would be willing to bet I could find a way to cut that number in half to 100.000 a month. Now city's can you stand a savings of 1.2 mil a year. And that's how you cant afford not to deploy…

I see this company going out front with there innovative, and inexpensive products, like there 2.4 5.8 bullet , the smallest radio I've found. It comes in 100mw and 1000 mw, its 3 inches long. For a company that's only been around since 2005 they are on the page with simplistic products. If they decide to start making there bullet in the 900MHz or 3.65 GHz ouch for the other equipment makers. For it would problebly only cost hundreds instead of thousands of dollars. There 2.4 5.8 hp bullets are…
