Hello from Chicago! I’m at
SUPERCOMM today and wanted to write a quick post between meetings on what I’ve seen and heard so far.
As with CTIA just a few weeks ago, net neutrality has been creating a lot of buzz on the show floor and in the headlines. However, if CTI…

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has pledged to "unleash the spectrum" for 4G mobile broadband. According to Genachowski, the next generation of mobile technology will "make all the difference."
"More and more I hear people say that broadband is the future of mobile, and I agree. I also believe the reverse is true - mobile is essential to the future of broadband. And the next generation of mobile technology - 4G - will make all the difference," said Genachowski. "4G will provide mobile connectiv…

This week kicks off the International
CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2009 show, being held in San Diego. I love this time of year. CTIA never fails to bring together a who’s who of the wireless world, discussing their company’s news and product launches as well as the industry’s latest and greatest.
Over the past few days, the media has repo…

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the FCC and its chairman,
Julius Genachowski. I think the issues they are examining and decisions they are making are very important to the communications industry – especially for wireless – so I wanted to take a few minutes to review and discuss the lates…

The U.S. government plans to propose broad new rules Monday that would force Internet providers to treat all Web traffic equally, seeking to give consumers greater freedom to use their computers or cellphones to enjoy videos, music and other legal services that hog bandwidth.
The move would make good on a campaign promise to Silicon Valley supporters like Google Inc. from President Barack Obama, but will trigger a battle with phone and cable companies like AT&T Inc. and Comcast Corp., which…

The FCC has not yet defined several key terms that are needed to be understood by the government officials doling out broadband stimulus money. At the request of lawmakers and lobbying groups, the FCC is (at long last) in the process of defining "broadband," "underserved," "unserved area" and other terms. The FCC is advising the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which will make the final call on how stimulus money gets allocated to companies building out broadban…

Looks like Kevin Martin will be followed by Obama-Biden tech advisor Julius Genachowski as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
A source close to the transition team told the Wall Street Journal that President-elect Barack Obama has picked Genachowski for the FCC job; observers also had him on the short list for the new chief technology officer post Obama plans, but Genachowski’s experience as chief counsel to Clinton era FCC Chairman Reed Hundt seems to have tilted the choice in…

We Need Free WIMAX Spectrum that Penetrates Walls. I attempted testing in the 5Ghz range but I found the signal cannot go through walls and trees. I suggest we need to have the FCC allocate free spectrum for WIMAX that would permit use of equipment for connecting neighborhoods. Sort of a CB radio approach.

A Momentous Week in US History
06 Nov 2008
This week has been a momentous one in US history and not only for Obama. The FCC has taken two pathbreaking decisions this week which give a legup to WiMAX and mobile broadband in the country.
The FCC has permitted the use of White Spaces in the TV spectrum for Mobile Broadband services in another decision. The decision by FCC is indeed a key one for many reasons. First, the spectral resources can no longer be afford to be wasted, and white spaces des…

As we predicted in our
Sidecut Report on WiMax, the "new" Clearwire deal, with its heavy-hitter lineup of investors and their $3.2 billion in capital, was sure to attract the attention of the big telcos, namely AT&T and Verizon. In our predictions we guessed that the big telcos would turn up the heat on Clearwire any way they could, and today it looks like we were right since AT&T jus…
