Amitabh Mobile WiMAX in India? Forget it !

Well, after a great deal of waiting, and as the commonwealth games are due in 2010, the auctions of 3G could not be postponed any longer. How could one tell the world at that time that we are now the only major country in Asia that does not have 3G yet?.It also pinches that there is no mobile TV or HDTV or digital terrestrial broadcasting. Also the fact that 4G-LTE netorks are about to be commissioned in Japan and USA does not add to any showoffs of technology which needs to be displayed at big e… Continue

Amitabh Narrowbanding WiMAX in India

Narrowbanding WiMAX 5 Jan 2009 It appears that the Foggy weather in Delhi extends to much more than just atmosphere, certainly to the Foggy Policies and to the ministries of Telecom and Finance. The Ministry of Finance has recommended the doubling of the reserve prices to $ 8 Billion for 3G and $ 4 Billion for WiMAX. Even though such events are quite common to policy watchers and hardly ruffle any feathers, this one takes the cake for a number of reasons. In principle we are not opposed to the… Continue

Alan J Weissberger WiMAX and 3G in India Delayed Again!

The sorry saga of WiMAX in India continues. We think India is vitally important to the health of the mobile WiMAX industry as it is potentially the largest emerging market for that technology. China has shown no interest in WiMAX and is pursuing their homegrown 3G technology instead. So that leaves India as the kingpin for WiMAX deployment in developing markets. For background info, please refer to: http://viodi.com/2008/08/11/wimax-in-india/ It seems we've been duped again. Having been told b… Continue

Amitabh Kumar Indian Policies now recognize Mobile WiMAX as an alternative technology to 3G

The newly announced changes to the 3G auction Policy and the WiMAX spectrum auctions now contains elements of recognition that WiMAX is not simply a way to extend wireless but an entirely viable and complete technology in itself. The recognition of the importance of WiMAX to be able to operate as an independent network providing voice, video and data services came in the form of doubling of the minimum reserve price for WiMAX auctions from Rs. 50.5 Billion ( $1.2Billion) to Rs 100.10 Billion ( $… Continue

Amitabh Kumar India Needs to Wake up to the Mobile WiMAX Reality

The WiMAX signals emanating from India are indeed strong, with companies such as Tata Communications committing $ 500 million on the rollouts. Companies in India such as Telsima are also technology suppliers worldwide. However the present rollouts in India are mostly based on Fixed WiMAX in the 3.4-3.6 GHz bands. The reality however is that virtually all new rollouts are now happening with Mobile WiMAX in 2.5 or 2.3 GHz bands. Mobile WiMAX technology is vastly superior with features such as Wave… Continue
