3G has significant challenges in the developing world

Please read the following articles that provide good insights on this. Overall 3G services and devices are proving too expensive in the developing countries. Also the lower speeds they offer, make bundling WiFi a must. So device vendors who have no bundled WiFi offering will suffer poor sales. Continue

Lowcost or free VoIP over WIMAX + Prepaid cellular plans could help consumers save money

Imagine you have WiMAX coverage in most places you care about, but not all places. For mobile broadband data plans this may not be a big deal, considering the growth of the iPhones even when the 3G coverage has been poor. Now consider the WiMAX operator offers low cost or free Voice over IP (Voice over the Internet) service when the subscriber has a Mobile WiMAX broadband data plan. The subscriber might be happy with the data coverage and the low cost voice offering, even though coverage is not… Continue

Fibre to the Home (FTTH) or Mobile WiMAX to the Home: Which is better?

Today many countries are implementing National Broadband plans, with the increasing realization that unless the digital economy is enabled with full access to all citizens to the Internet, the world's largest digital resource, they may become less competitive on the world stage. There is a big rush to either install Fibre to the home (FTTH) solutions at extremely high prices. The ranges seem to be anywhere from $2500 per home to $800 per home, based on availability of Fibre or other connectivit… Continue

How much HSPA technology needs the iPhone to succeed

If you see this recent article on about HSPA adoption http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ATT-Leads-Global-HSPA-zacks-4280072692.html?x=0, you will be suprised to see that a lot of the recent boom has been singularly due to Apple's iPhone. Recently, I've been tweeting about this as well. The reality of the market is such that HSPA does not provide true broadband speeds on the average compared t… Continue

2010 may likely see WiMAX/HSPA modems!

Already in 2009 we are seing Mobile WiMAX/EVDO modems roll out in the US. Clearwire, Sprint and Comcast have already either started or plan to offer this. As this Mobile WIMAX wave of roll-outs happen worldwide, its very likely that HSPA operators would also start MVNO service for Mobile WiMAX. Without spending a single dime on LTE, they can quickly get access to the WiMAX 4G service. They get a long line-up of WiMAX embedded Laptops & netbooks (example: https://www.clear.com/shop/laptops_n… Continue

Smartphones with PC or Enterprise computing genes will win!

All smart phones which try to create mobile internet experience as close as possible to the PC will win! I do not need to say much. Apples iPhone has already succeeded. RIM which started as an enterprise messaging device has also done well. Palm that mastered the PDA space and was the darling in the enterprise will also do well as can be seen with their Pre device. (These opinions are my own and not those of my employer) Continue

A smart strategy for AT&T...MVNO WiMAX from Clearwire

Today we are at a cusp of reducing costs for deploying new technology. So if operators decide to spend billions to build out new 4G networks, they should do it by partnering than engage in religious technology wars. WiMAX has everything to deliver a superlative 4G experience for the consumer. The WiMAX networks being built out in 139 countries is going to grow over the years. For any operator trying to go build out a new network vs doing MVNO, they could very easily try to start winning subscr… Continue

Palm Pre and opportunities for Cisco in smart phones

Palm has got a really cool product in the Pre. But they need money to really make it scale globally and win. Maybe cash rich Cisco can help? It can really help solidify their consumer strategy even more by entering the smart phone space. However I would recommend keeping Palm independent in any such strategy. (These opinions are my own and not those of my employer) Continue

The Future is a Mobile IP world....

I personally believe, the future we are moving to is a Mobile IP world. I predict that before the end of the next decade there will be more Mobile IP connections/devices compared to fixed IP connections in all forms combined. I also believe that the 3GPP world has been very reluctant to acknowledge this. Even the name EPC or 'Evolved Packet Core' sounds more reluctance than embracing of Mobile IP. I understand the business interests behind the reluctance to embrace Mobile IP more strongly than… Continue

Skipping 3G and going straight to Mobile WiMAX from 2G/2.5G for emerging countries makes sense

In emerging countries, it might make sense for 2G/2.5G Mobile operators to deploy 802.16e/Mobile WiMAX while skipping 3G all together. Because the costs of deploying and scaling an expensive technology like 3G, might not be worthwhile as deploying Mobile WiMAX that has 4-6 times the 3G data rates and is the technology of the future. We are fast moving to a Mobile Internet communications world where end-to-end Mobile IP networks based on OFDMA+MIMO technologies will be the norm. So why deploy in… Continue

History repeating and why cheaper and faster Mobile Broadband internet technology like WiMAX will win!

If you look at what's happening in the mobile internet world today, it is very much analogous to what happened with early dial-up based internet access and the ensuing DSL/Cable broadband revolution. In the late 1990's, it was the hey day of the V.90 modems and Dial-up internet craze. The competition between AOL, MSN and hundreds of dial-up providers was fierce. We would find many dial-up internet deals with $50 or $100 or even free PCs for upto 4 years of contract dial-up internet service. The… Continue
