Already in 2009 we are seing Mobile WiMAX/EVDO modems roll out in the US. Clearwire, Sprint and Comcast have already either started or plan to offer this.
As this Mobile WIMAX wave of roll-outs happen worldwide, its very likely that HSPA operators would also start MVNO service for Mobile WiMAX. All smart phones which try to create mobile internet experience as close as possible to the PC will win!
I do not need to say much. Apples iPhone has already succeeded. RIM which started as an enterprise messaging device has also done well. Palm that mastered the PDA space and was the darling in the enterprise will also do well as can be seen with their Pre device.

Today we are at a cusp of reducing costs for deploying new technology. So if operators decide to spend billions to build out new 4G networks, they should do it by partnering than engage in religious technology wars.
WiMAX has everything to deliver a superlative 4G experience for the consumer. The WiMAX networks being built out in 139 countries is going to grow over the years.

Palm has got a really cool product in the Pre. But they need money to really make it scale globally and win. Maybe cash rich Cisco can help? It can really help solidify their consumer strategy even more by entering the smart phone space. However I would recommend keeping Palm independent in any such strategy.

I personally believe, the future we are moving to is a Mobile IP world. I predict that before the end of the next decade there will be more Mobile IP connections/devices compared to fixed IP connections in all forms combined.
I also believe that the 3GPP world has been very reluctant to acknowledge this. Even the name EPC or 'Evolved Packet Core' sounds more reluctance than embracing of Mobile IP. I understand the business interests behind the reluctance to embrace Mobile IP more strongly than…

In emerging countries, it might make sense for 2G/2.5G Mobile operators to deploy 802.16e/Mobile WiMAX while skipping 3G all together. Because the costs of deploying and scaling an expensive technology like 3G, might not be worthwhile as deploying Mobile WiMAX that has 4-6 times the 3G data rates and is the technology of the future.
