Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) has established the country’s first WiMAX network, branded Blink. Some of the first people to stake their claim to the "plug and play" 4G like broadband wireless network technology will be the Heads of Government arriving later this week for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). In April this year, TSTT was awarded a temporary licence to deploy its WiMax network.
During a press conference on Monday, where the roll out of T…

“Today, we are proud to have secured an additional $920 million in debt financing, which, when coupled with the $1.56 billion of recently announced equity financing and the $1.85 billion of debt financing that we closed on today, demonstrates our ability to access the capital markets on attractive terms and in sufficient size to meet our needs, while at the same time prudently balancing equity dilution with the cost of capital,” said
Bill Morrow, CEO of Clearwire. “With this latest tranch…

Editors Note: Clearwire (and Sprint) use the term 4G to describe their mobile WiMAX network. ITU-R does not agree with that designation, nor does this author.
Clearwire CEO William T. Morrow:
"Our objective remains the same -- to aggressively expand our 4G network with nationwide coverage, delivering the best poss…

You might be surprised to hear that Clearwire’s General Manager of Philadelphia Andrew Kupiec thinks the city’s mobile market isn’t crowded. It’s a big market, he says, and there’s plenty of room in the proverbial sandbox.
“Mobility and speed is our focus … We don’t need to unseat any of the incumbents, the major players in the market,” the Phoenixville resident—who grew up outside Bryn Mawr—said in a telephone interview with Technically Philly Tuesday.
Since we reported that Clear’s next-gene…

Fierce Wireless reports that CLEAR reseller Comcast is executing on their plan to test WiMAX femtocells.
"Comcast confirmed that it is currently testing WiMAX femtocells, actions that hint at an expanded wireless broadband effort on the part of the nation's largest cable provider. The news does not necessarily come as a surprise. Last year, Unstrung reported that part of Comcast's deal with Clearwire (Comcast resells Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service) calls for 5 MHz of spectrum across the U.S.…

For Mobile WiMAX advocates, this conference was mostly disappointing. No firm announcement on the long rumored tri-mode (WiMAX, 3G-EVDO, WiFi) smart phone, uncertain pricing for MIDs (see earlier wimax360 post), nothing on mobile video/Sprint TV for WiMAX, and no announcements of eReaders or cameras with embedded WiMAX interfaces.
It seems Sprint is primarilly concerned with promoting an open network and getting more smart phones from RIM and Android supporters on their mobile network. There wa…

It's all about spectrum: at the
Sprint Developers Conference in Santa Clara, CA today, Scott Richardson of Clearwire stated "spectrum trumps technology when evaluating a broadband wireless service." That was presumably to give Clearwire the edge over ATT and VZW in the race to 4G. Clearwire holds tons of 2.5GHz spectrum in the U.S. Now the FCC is urging the federal government and broadcasters to free up spectrum for broadband wireless carriers.
The WSJ reports that Federal regulators are…
